The immune boost smoothie is perfect for those horrible non-colds that appear during mezzo tempo or change of season – not quite a cold, not quite an allergy, something in the sinuses that refuses to go away. This smoothie is my own invention and I swear by it. Another good immune boost smoothie is this one from the Minimalist Baker (pictured).
Although citrus fruits such as grapefruits, oranges, and lemons are the usual suspects for high vitamin C content, pineapple is also great for immune support (they're packed with vitamin C and antioxidants).
1-2 large grapefruits, peeled and cut
2 large oranges, peeled and cut
1 lemon, squeezed
handful of chopped pineapple
1-2 cloves of garlic
1-inch cube of fresh garlic, peeled
spoonful of Manuka honey
Place all the ingredients in the blender. Add some water or a splash of juice if the mixture is too thick. The drink will be full of pulp (that's the good stuff) and have a 'spicy' flavour from the ginger and the garlic – don't worry, that means it's working.
Drink 1-2 smoothies every day until you start feeling better. Also: drink lots of water and go to bed early.
